Geometric Jaals

2017 - 2020

Jaal translates directly to ‘net’ or ‘web’ and refers to the perforated patterns that make up latticed architectural screens. Such geometric patterns are the guiding principles of much traditional Islamic art-making and design, and underpins much of my own art production. In a sense, my Jaals are thought experiments. They pare down art creation to the bare essentials: line, space, color. They invite expansive development: they could be transmuted into woven carpet, into upholstery, into clothing (such as the silk scarves illustrate), even into an entire installation. The Jaals are provocative in that they are ideas held in abeyance.
