Material yet intangible, apparently solid yet ephemeral, existing in liminal spaces, clouds float across the sky, universal yet in a space of their own. Screen carvings while solid and tangible, dissolve the solidity of the material structure, representing the spiritual within matter. Both clouds and carved screens blur the boundaries between spaces: with screens, it is often between indoors and out; with clouds, it is between the terrestrial and the celestial. Both conceal and reveal; both mediate light and space. The juxtaposition of carved screens and cloud formations exposes the commonalities between the two paradoxical structures. This first iteration of Floating Meditations denotes my movement into study of the atmospheric, the evanescent. I continued this exploration with Groundless, but in a sense it came to a new maturity with Cosmic Veils, where shifting light itself became my primary medium.
